ONCOLOGY NURSE - CAPE TOWN

POSITION INFO:

Requirements

Relevant Diploma or Degree from tertiary institution.

Minimum of  5 years’ experience in a similar environment / practice.

Must be registered with the HPCSA.

Duties and responsibilities

  • dminister Chemotherapy to patients as prescribed by an Oncologist according to established practices and standards. Must have an excellent understanding of chemotherapy treatment techniques and patient care.
  • Practice safe procedures and adhere to chemotherapy safety measures.
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy in treatment set-up and an awareness of safety issues.
  • Utilize treatment accessories to accurately reproduce chemotherapy treatment as recorded in the set-up notes.
  • Maintain the quality assurance program.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed treatment chart, blood results and all other medical documentation.
  • Complete the daily treatment schedule.  Maintain an accurate record of procedures, including billing information and codes.
  • Serve as a liaison between the patient and other members of the oncology team (Oncologists, radiotherapy, social workers, dieticians, etc.).
  • Remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient.
  • Explain treatment procedures to the patient and inform the patient as to probable side effects.
  • Observe the clinical progress of the patient.  Use clinical decision-making skills and report any signs of complications to the relevant oncologist.
  • Display professional conduct essential to the wellbeing of the oncology patient.
  • Adhere to chemotherapy safety checks.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics.
  • Maintain a safe, neat, and orderly chemigraphy room and nurse station.
  • Comply with all the practice facility’s policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Actively commit to working in an open, transparent, and honest manner with a culture dedicated to learning and improvement.
  • Admin tasks such as stats, record keeping, preparation of authorization documents
  • Pro-actively maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) in accordance with the HPCSA professional standards
