POSITION INFO:

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is implementing a New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the "Staffing South African Universities Framework. nGAP involves the recruitment of new academics who display significant potential for scholarship in teaching and research. The programme consists of a 6-year development programme, including short courses on research and teaching development. As a permanently appointed Academic, employment will commence with a reduced teaching load. The workload will increase to a full load within the 6-year period with a spread of responsibilities. An appointed mentor will provide applicable support, while progress will be monitored to ensure successful completion of the nGAP. As this is a partnership between DHET and NMU, successful candidates will have to comply with the normal employment conditions of NMU, as well as the requirements of the DHET.

The position is in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training''s New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) and the Faculty of Humanities vision of advancing the revitalization of the Humanities. The Department of Public Management and Leadership seeks to appoint a self- motivated, aspiring disaster and risk management academic to contribute to the teaching and research responsibilities of the department. This lecturer post will be filled in accordance with the university''s recruitment policy and the transformation imperatives of the country. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the broader academic project of the department.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level.
  • Conduct research, attend academic conferences and publish to improve the research profile of the faculty.
  • The candidate will be expected to complete a PhD within six years from the date of assumptions of duties.
  • Serve as a collaborative team member towards the Public Management and Leadership curriculum revitalization.
  • Contribute towards curriculum development in the field of disaster and risk management within the department.
  • Liaise with internal and external disaster and risk management stakeholders to organize engagements that contribute towards this developing competency within the department.

  • Ability to teach at undergraduate and post graduate level.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor at undergraduate and post graduate level
  • Ability to conduct research independently.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Familiarity and investment in contributing to disaster and risk management knowledge in South Africa and internationally.
  • Research interest in the developing fields of disaster and risk management.
  • Research connections with any aspect of disaster management broadly conceived to take a central role in the curriculum design of new modules in Disaster Management
  • A strong background in policy analysis and design in the field of disaster and risk management.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 
  • 70% for their Master''s qualification in Public Management, preferably specialising in disaster and risk management.
  • Some practical experience or research fieldwork in the field of disaster management would be an added advantage.
  • Proof of registration for a PhD in Public Management with evidence of good progress (beneficial)
  • Prior experience as a lecturer, tutor and research/teaching assistant will be an added advantage
  • Fluent in both English and one of the African languages.
  • The nGap appointee must be a South African citizen
