JOB DESCRIPTION:

Main purpose of the job:

  • Oversee the nursing team and all nursing functions performed on participants of the respective studies

Location:

  • VIDA Laboratory - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital

Key performance areas:

Staff Management

  • Oversee and manage the VIDA clinic nursing team
  • Ensure adequate nursing coverage in all clinic areas. Identify and troubleshoot any problem areas and redeploy staff as required
  • Ensure consistent work of high quality is delivered in keeping with the protocol through continued training and active oversight
  • Ensure adequate documented and regular training on all relevant SOPs

Participant Consultation

  • Perform consultations and oversee other nurses in terms of ensuring:
    • Timeous attention to patients as referred by support staff
    • Adequate history-taking by recording main complaint; assessing the visual state of the patient; conducting vitals including
    • Temperature, Blood pressure, Blood Sugar Levels, etc. as required for patient health and in line with protocol requirements
    • Perform skilled phlebotomy as required
    • Facilitate Urine and sugar testing; Sputum collection, Pregnancy Tests; HIV Testing and counseling as required, ensuring protocol adherence
    • Refer participants to Medical Officers or others as required
    • Provide health care education to participants in line with IMCI guidelines

Administration

  • Ensure adequate administration is maintained by the nursing team in terms of overseeing:
    • Adequate completion of source documentation in line with protocol requirements
    • Adequate record maintenance as required e.g. Stock counts, QC Records, Testing Records, etc.
    • Ensure sufficient stock is on hand by ordering as required and maintaining records as per project requirements

Customer Service

  • Build and maintain authentic relationships with both internal and external stakeholders ensuring a high level of customer centricity
  • Ensure all interactions are professional

Self-management and performance ownership

  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks & activities and demonstrates effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Inform relevant parties in the event of tasks or deadlines not being met and provides appropriate means of resolution
  • Support and drives the business’ core values e. Maintain a positive attitude
  • Respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership of own career development
  • Manage colleague's and client’s expectations and communicate appropriately
  • Willing to help others and go the extra mile to meet team targets and objectives

Required minimum education and training:

  • Nursing Diploma (Enrolled/Professional Nurse)
  • GCP Training

Required minimum work experience:

  • Previous working experience in a clinical research environment
  • Extensive staff management experience or demonstrated ability to oversee staff compulsory
  • Excellent clinical Skills (phlebotomy on adult and paediatric patients including neonates)

Professional body registration:

  • South African Nursing Council
