Description

 

The Network Engineer’s role is to ensure the stability and integrity of voice, data, video, WiFi and network services. This is achieved by planning, designing, and developing local area networks

(LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) across the organization. In addition, the Network Engineer will participate in the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of all network hardware, software, and communication links. This individual will also analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training.

Strategy & Planning

 

  • Collaborate with department heads to assess near- and long-term network capacity needs.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping,

processes, and service records.

  • Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, usage, and disaster recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy LANs, WANs, and wireless networks, including, routers, hubs, switches, and other hardware.
  • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the networking industry.
  • Oversee new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.
  • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services.
  • Fully support, configure, maintain and upgrade corporate customer’s networks and in-house servers
  • Third level operational support of entire Network environment and manage timely resolution of all critical and/or complex problems meeting SLA requirements
  • Configure and install various network devices and services
  • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations
  • Continuously monitor network performance and ensure system availability and reliability
  • Monitor network resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning
  • Support and administer third-party applications
  • Ensure network security and connectivity
  • Monitor network performance (availability, utilization, throughput, goodput, and latency) and test for weaknesses
  • Set up user accounts, permissions and passwords
  • Resolve problems reported by end user
  • Define network policies and procedures
  • Specify system requirements and design solutions

Requirements

  • Good understanding of TCP/IP networking and VLANs
  • Networking technologies, principles and protocols based on OSI model, TCP/IP, UDP, IP addressing and MAC addresses etc.
  • Enterprise scale WAN systems (Routing with EIGRP, OSPF, VRRP, BGP etc.)
  • Security Technologies Knowledge (Zone based Firewalling, IPS, Web Filtering, IPSec VPN etc.)
  • Enterprise Wi-Fi technologies and infrastructure, including both autonomous and central deployments (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ad, AP’s, Wi-Fi controllers)
  • Enterprise scale Data Centre Switching platforms
  • Proven experience in a network administrator role
  • Hands on experience in networking, routing and switching
  • Experience with firewalls, Internet VPN’s remote implementation, troubleshooting, and problem resolution is desired
  • Ability to set up and configure networking hardware
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery software and methodologies
  • Great at organising, prioritising and multitasking
  • Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Able to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to effectively prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Huawei (HCNP), and Cisco (CCNP and CCIE advantageous) Knowledge and Certification. Ruckus knowledge advantageous
  • BSc degree in Computer Science or related field certification
  • 5 – 10 Years related experience

Measuring the performance of an IP Network Engineer

It is important to measure both the effectiveness and the efficiency of the role of the IP Network Engineer.

  • SLA compliance
  • Reduce network Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by minimizing downtime and increasing productivity, reducing overlap or duplication of tools
  • Decrease in Mean Time to Repair/Restore (MTTR) by providing intelligent business management processes, thus improving network availability and reliability
  • Managing technology and alignment with business objectives
  • Develop technical solutions or offerings for network services including requirements, functional & non-functional specifications, design, integration, testing, deployment, and optimization.
  • Reviewing and recommending network related technologies, designs and services that will assist in the support of the UBS Holdings and client requirements.
  • Evaluate and recommend different network related hardware, software, and services to be supported as “standard components” that will be utilized in support of infrastructure builds.
  • Drive proof of technology planning and participate in joint lab and solution development with technology partners.
  • Ensure compliance with infrastructure design methodologies during project work with both the National Service Delivery and all UBS Project Teams.
