Medical Scientist (Contract) Wits NICD

Main purpose of the job:

• Perform HIV and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine-related research as per grant-funded objectives

Location:

• NICD, Sandringham, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Recombinant DNA techniques (cloning, mutagenesis, PCR, plasmid preparation, Sanger sequencing)
• Mammalian cell culture (sterile technique, maintaining, and cryopreservation of cell lines)
• Functional cell-based assays (such as performing and analyzing neutralization assays)

Required minimum education and training:

• MSc in Microbiology or related discipline
• Prior experience in HIV or SARS-CoV-2 research is an advantage

Required minimum work experience:

• 2 years of previous laboratory experience, and competence in two key performance areas

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• High level of computer literacy
• High-level problem-solving ability needed
• Exceptional self-management, conscientious work ethic as well as above-average attention to detail needed
• Motivated, organized, systematic and professional
• Should be able to work under pressure with efficient multitasking
• Must be willing to work after hours occasionally, as needed
