The User Services Librarian will be part of the UFH Libraries’ Clients’ Service Team on East London Campus responsible for information and learning services offered virtually through the library website and other contemporary students’ communication channels and within the physical library space. The incumbent should have profound knowledge of circulation module of a library management system such as Sierra.  The incumbent should further ensure that the circulation desk services section operates optimally to meet diverse and dynamic user needs striving to support students with different learning styles while also maintaining a safe, secure and hygienic environment and managing the library’s physical space and facilities to ascertain that it is conducive for learning and research. The candidate should be willing to work on weekends and in the evenings.

JOB DESCRIPTION:


The key responsibilities include:

  • Providing services that are client focused aiming at meeting the dynamic information needs of a heterogeneous user community and ensuring its satisfaction; referring all subject specific queries to information librarians; and referring special cases to relevant UFH Units.
  • Performing front desk information needs analysis of undergraduate and postgraduate students to recommend essential information resources, information and learning services for enhanced user experience; and handling CHELSA letters for research students
  • Managing all circulation desk duties such as checking in and out of library materials, renewals, short loan, recall, inter branch loans, Shelving, ILL, patron clearance, and library opening hours
  • Maintaining good communication with the library user community using various channels and promptly attending to the Ask Librarian channel, issuing notices, and alerting users on overdue books.
  • Ensuring safety and security of library resources; and coordinating stock taking, preservation and conservation of books to identify lost and dilapidated books.
  • Maintaining Circulation Module by performing global updates, creating review files, preparing statistical reports, balancing and saving daily fines, viewing holds and course reserves, extending loan period for identified at-risk students
  • Providing OPAC and generic database training, participating in library orientation and induction; coordinating the short loan services with the course conveners
  • Coordinating the East London campus library functions for commemorative events and community engagement; and arranging exhibitions and tours of the Libraries’ facilities for users and external stakeholders
  • Managing the user services section human resources, services and systems with clear plans, manual procedures within approved policies and ambit of the law
 
Minimum requirements
  • B Bibl Degree or equivalent LIS qualification
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in an academic library clients’ services
  • Knowledge of a library management system circulation module
 
Key competencies
  • Competency in processes for circulation of library materials;
  • Knowledge of academic library circulation policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge of information and learning services for hybrid learning environments
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Adaptable, positive outlook and interest in user experiences and information needs; and ability to work in a collaborative library environment.
