The Cataloguing and Metadata Librarian will be part of the UFH Libraries’ technical services team responsible for information resource description and discoverability that is done on Sierra library management system, Vital, DSpace and Figshare. The incumbent should understand the essence of the library catalogue as a tool that represents the library globally. The incumbent should further ensure that the library resources and university scholarly output are optimally displayed to enable seamless access by end users.

JOB DESCRIPTION:


The key responsibilities include:
  • Creating bibliographic records on WorldShare, and export to Sierra System
  • Creating metadata, checking the completeness and accuracy of the ETD provided on Staff-Share and upload it on Vital.
  • Creating and/or download metadata for e-resources and research data, check for ssj numbers or EBZ from Ex-libris.
  • Maintaining records by upgrading short records, modifying bibliographic records, and merging duplicates.
  • Editing the bibliographic records for integration in the library management system.
  • Exporting (downloading) the bibliographic record from WorldShare to Sierra. 
  • Creating bibliographic records, either original or copy cataloguing newly acquired library materials including retrospective records; as well as generating metadata using schemas such as Dublin Core, MODS and XML.
  • Resolving discrepancies in bibliographic records and setting authority procedures for the library.
  • Maintaining bibliographic services procedure manuals and policies.

Minimum requirements
  • B Bibl Degree or equivalent LIS qualification
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in an academic library cataloguing and metadata
  • Knowledge of overall technical services’ operations and specifically bibliographic formats and standards, namely; (MARC21,) (RDA/AACR2), (LCSH), (DDC 23) and OCLC WorldShare.
Key competencies
  • Knowledge of Sierra Cataloguing Module or any Library Management System cataloguing module; its enhancements, updates, applications, and interpretations for cataloguing and classification practices.
  • Knowledge of resource description and discovery platforms such as Vital, DSpace and Figshare.
  • Working knowledge of Ex-libris 360 and NACO authorities is highly recommended.
  • Adaptable, positive outlook and interest in user experiences and needs.
