CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Computing Sciences (CS) is looking to fill a position of Associate Lecturer/Lecturer within the department with an enthusiastic, forward-thinking person who will contribute to the vision and mission of the Department. The field of CS includes Computer Science, Information Systems or IT. There are three key areas of performance that academic staff members in the department need to meet, namely: 1) learning and teaching; 2) engagement and 3) research in the Department''s research areas. The main purpose of this post is therefore to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the Department at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, to supervise Postgraduate students, to do research, to contribute to community engagement and to be involved in the core functions of the University.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Learning and Teaching

• Facilitate learning and teaching for assigned module(s) in accordance with the principles of good teaching practice, which includes material development, engaging with students and module administration;

• Evaluate and reflect on the quality of own teaching and assessment; and

• Develop and review new modules/curricula

• Demonstrate knowledge of and skills in providing effective learning and teaching opportunities.

Research

• Provide research supervision to Postgraduate students;

• Management of international research projects for the Department;

• Generate research outputs for publication in the Department''s research areas;

Engagement

• Contribute to the school career events and marketing events; and

• Contribute to external engagement of the Department particularly related to social outreach.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Ability to manage collaborative team research projects.
  • Evidence of teaching experience in the field of Computing Sciences, including setting and marking assessments that require high-level cognitive thinking
  • Evidence of the ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples in learning and teaching practice.
  • Experience in module and programme development within the Computing Sciences domain.
  • Ability to supervise senior Postgraduate students at Honours and Masters level.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 

• Lecturer

  • A Master''s in Computer Science, Information Systems or IT
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in the field of Computing Sciences

• Associate Lecturer

  • An Honours/M+4 in Computer Science, IT or Information Systems
  • Minimum of 1 year teaching experience in the field of Computing Sciences

• Sound knowledge of topics in the field of Computing Sciences, taught up to Honours level

• The following will be an added advantage:

  • A PhD in the field of Computing Sciences
  • Experience in research supervision of Phd students
  • Publication outputs in the areas of Computing Sciences
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems such as Respondus and the NMU LMS Moodle
  • Experience of Management and administration of large (over 1000) student groups
  • Possess scarce skills in the field of pure Computer Science or Data Science

  • completing an assessment related to relevant CS skills required for the modules in the department
