POSITION INFO:

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Higher Education and Training is implementing a New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the “Staffing South African Universities Framework. nGAP involves the recruitment of new academics who display significant potential for scholarship in teaching and research. The programme consists of a 6-year development programme, including short courses on research and teaching development. As a permanently appointed Academic, employment will commence with a reduced teaching load. The workload will increase to a full load within the 6-year period with a spread of responsibilities and levels. An appointed mentor and all NMU structures and systems will provide applicable support, while progress will be monitored to ensure successful completion of the nGAP. As this is a partnership between DHET and NMU, successful candidates will have to comply with the normal employment conditions of NMU, as well as the requirements of the DHET.

The department of Sociology and Anthropology in the Faculty of Humanities seeks to appoint a self- motivated, aspiring anthropology academic to contribute to the teaching and research responsibilities of the department. This lecturer post will be made in accordance with the university recruitment policy and DHET transformation imperatives. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the broader academic project of the department particularly in the areas of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) with key emphasis on nutrition, and health questions across a range of social landscapes and ecological environments.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels with various class sizes ranging from small to large
  • Supervising honors students independently, with an option to co-supervise masters students
  • Conducting research, attending academic conferences, and publishing to improve the research profile of the candidate and faculty
  • The candidate will be expected to complete their doctoral studies within four years from the date of assumptions of duties
  • Initiating public and academic engagements in Anthropology in general and the field of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) with a focus on health and nutrition across a range of social landscapes and ecological environments.
  • Enhancing IKS in the curriculum and growing the department’s capacity in the area of health and nutrition
  • Serving as a collaborative team member towards revitalization of the Anthropology curriculum

CORE COMPETENCIES

 

  • Ability to teach classes of varying sizes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Ability to supervise and mentor undergraduate and post graduate students
  • Ability to conduct research independently
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Demonstrable capacity to contribute to the Anthropology of IKS with a focus on health and nutrition across a range of social landscapes and ecological environments.
  • Ability to engage stakeholders in the IKS field
  • The candidate must be technologically competent, e.g. teach online and work with internal institutional systems
  •  The candidate must have background or some experience with online/digital research methods
  • Ability to manage time effectively, especially in a work from home environment.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • A Masters qualification in Anthropology or related field with a 70% average.
  • The candidate must have a broad background in research on IKS with a demonstrable research/ engagement or teaching interest in health and nutrition across a range of social landscapes and ecological environments.
  • Demonstrable engagement in IKS initiatives and stakeholder networking would be an added advantage
  • Undergraduate teaching/tutoring experience
