Laboratory Assistant: Zoology & Entomology (Internal)

SUMMARY:

Minimum requirements:

• A BSc Honours degree in Zoology or Entomology (or a related field).
• At least two years’ experience working as a field and/or technical assistant at a tertiary or research institution.

• Evidence of working knowledge of laboratory and field equipment.
• A valid code EB drivers licence.
• Ability to cope with physically demanding tasks.

POSITION INFO:

Responsibilities will include: 

• Maintenance of facilities and equipment in the Department.
• Possible travel away from campus and occasionally working after hours and on weekends.
• Assisting and reporting to the Senior Laboratory Assistant in the preparation and coordination of practical sessions; includes preparation of indoor and outdoor practical sessions and practical tests.
• Assist the Departmental Administrator where needed (i.e. carrying equipment/supplies).
• Ensure and oversee the maintenance of the department vehicles and boats
• Driving (and possible skippering) of staff and students on fieldtrips and practical sessions.
• Ensure proper storage, use and disposal of the Department’s chemicals and waste and compliance with safety regulations.
• Participate in normal administrative duties necessary for the smooth running of the Department.
