A Laboratory Assistant (12 Months Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium in Braamfontein, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

POSITION INFO:

Background

Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof

Main purpose of the job

• To provide technical assistance with laboratory-based research experimental procedures
• To support a research team in the development of tools to address the TB Epidemic at the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research (CBTBR)

Location

• University of the Witwatersrand and National Health Laboratory Services, Braamfontein

Key performance areas

• Collaborate closely with the Research Team to carry out laboratory experiments and associated preparatory work required in the research project. This includes the following competencies:
• Culturing of M. tuberculosis using various techniques (Liquid and Solid media cultures)
• DNA extractions (CTAB, Colony boil)
• RNA extractions
• PCR
• Agarose gel electrophoresis
• Bacterial staining procedures
• Microscopy
• Decontamination of sputum samples
• Mycobacterial strain typing
• Sample storage and archiving
• Preparation of media (solid and liquid)
• Preparation and tracking of daily quality controls
• Recording and archiving of experimental results
• Reporting of experimental results to line manager
• Tracking of project-specific consumables

Required minimum education and training

• BTech or BSc degree
• Sound understanding of the requirements of Molecular Biology/Genetics/Laboratory operations

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

• Excellent reporting skills
• Good Communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Effective time management skills
• Good interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to work under pressure and being pro-active

Required minimum work experience

• 1-year of experience working in a microbiology lab
