CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

Teaching and engaging Medical and Health Science students in terms of academic literacy and/or language for learning, writing and research purposes. Assist with the design of academic literacy teaching materials. Foster socio-economic advancement through the scholarship of teaching and applied research. Provide guidance to students in all aspects of academic learning.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

1. To facilitate teaching and learning, within a team approach, for Academic Literacy to Medical and Health Science students
2. To assist with the design of teaching materials for Academic Literacy with a specific focus on undergraduate Medical Students
3. To implement innovative teaching methodologies which include online platforms
4. To provide guidance and support to students in literacy and/or language
5. To timeously identify students’ academic needs/ challenges and refer for support
6. To set, and mark tests, assignments and examinations
7. To conduct research and develop research and grant proposals
8. To perform academic administration and perform all related duties

CORE COMPETENCIES

1. Sound knowledge of the theory, application, and integration of Academic Literacy

2. Experience in up to date, technology enhanced and student-centred teaching and blended learning methods

3. Experience in the development of curricula and learning materials for Academic Literacy

4. Ability to ensure that assessments are quality controlled and standardised and that learning materials are in place

5. Track record of publications and research

6. Ability to work effectively in teams

7. Competence in the Microsoft Office suite, and willingness to learn internal software programs

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & experience

Masters’ degree in English, Applied Linguistics or Linguistics or a field related to Academic literacy

Minimum of two years’ experience in teaching or tutoring Academic Literacy or English Language at University level

A record of recently published research and/or current research activity
