SGS South Africa has been contracted by Palabora Mining Company to run a production orientated laboratory. The laboratory falls under the supervision of the Geotechnical Superintendent under Growth. Sample preparation occurs both in the underground section of the laboratory, as well as the surface section. The main purpose of the laboratory is X-Ray Fluorescence analysis of Cu ore mined to determine the % Cu in the ore.
Primary Purposes
The junior chemist is responsible for the analysis of the samples by means of x-ray fluorescence and also has a supervisory role over the sample preparation. The junior chemist ensures that laboratory methods, standards and quality are adhered to, when processing samples. The junior chemist is responsible for the laboratory’s assay and analytical requirements whilst ensuring that timely turn-around times are achieved within the safety protocols and procedures of both PMC and SGS.
Accountabilities
- Sample analysis
- Capture data/results
- Evaluate and interpret QCs and results
- Accurate record keeping
- Sample preparation supervision
- Adhering to and maintenance of QA system in laboratory
- Identification of and correcting of instrument drift
- General XRF-instrument maintenance and upkeep
- Daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly inspections and reporting
- General custodianship of procedures and Safety documentation
- Inventory list updates and placing orders for consumables
- Ensuring safety standards are adhered to
- Holds 2.9.2 responsibility
- Approximately 85% of time spent will be as per the above. The other 10% of the time is allocated to administrative duties e.g. meetings and line-ups.
Education and Qualification
Knowledge
- Matric with good results in Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and Physical Science on the higher grade.
- Tertiary qualification in Chemistry with XRF experience will be advantageous.
- Chemical and sample prep laboratory experience will be advantageous.
- General supervisory experience of at least 2 years preferable
