SUMMARY:
Intern: Implementation Science (BMGF Planning Grant) (6 Months Internship) x2 vacancies are available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (RHI) in Parktown, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Main purpose of the job

  • Wits RHI is implementing the BMGF Planning Grant to create an appropriate and receptive environment for the effective use of existing and new HIV prevention products to maximize their impact as they become available for AGYW in Gauteng province, South Africa.

Key performance areas

To effectively deliver on the project activities, there is a need for 2 Interns to assist the team with the following:

  • General administrative support to the staff
  • Collect, manage and maintain quality data for research and operations purposes
  • Adhere to Good Clinical Practice Standards
  • Ready to work on deadline and tight schedules
  • Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail and a focus on quality and innovation
  • Support the study staff in ensuring the appropriate monitoring and study registers, logs/tools are used and the data captured
  • Address relevant concerns and misconceptions about the study and report to study staff
  • The ability to prioritize work, exercise initiative and work with minimal direction
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues
  • A cross-cutting M&E project team including follow-up of participants
  • Demand creation in the field
  • Qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Translating and transcribing the research documents
  • Quantitative data management
  • Planning of training and participating in this training

Required minimum education and training

  • A degree in social sciences, any scientific discipline or equivalent with relevant experiences and education/training

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Traveling may be required
  • Must be able to work in the community/clinics with patients who are HIV positive or negative and/or vulnerable

Required minimum work experience

  • Experience with qualitative data analysis using NVivo software and analysis package would be an advantage
  • A good understanding of research designs, methods and data processing and management
  • Wits RHI prefers individuals who have never worked at all
  • Wits RHI wants, at the end of the assignment, the interns should have gained exposure and experience in the field as well as providing an opportunity to see if the career field is the right one based on getting personal experience in the field
