IBM System Operator

SUMMARY:
The successful candidate will be a member of the IT Operations team responsible for technical and business operational support, client and stakeholder interaction, job execution, and system/process monitoring to ensure continued availability of our client’s IBM i systems and Business Applications hosted on the IBM i. The System Operator performs varied activities and moderately complex administrative, operational and customer support assignments during his/her duties. The position requires shifts and standby to be worked. Standard shift and standby times are listed below, but are subject to change as business needs demand.

POSITION INFO:

• Take ownership and responsibility for all calls logged against the operations team
• Investigate, identify root causes and resolve system, job and product issues
• Log, document and categorize issues and solutions
• Escalate unresolved issue timeously
• Liaise with service providers and internal stakeholders to resolve network, system and product issues
• Produce complete and accurate shift handover reports
• Schedule and manage jobs and file transfers to external parties
• Monitor and respond to exceptions and alerts on system message queues, application logs and Zabbix alerting system
• Display a keen interest in all client’s products and offerings beyond his/her core function
• Participate in formal and ad hoc projects as required
• Maintain accurate records for audit purposes
• Produce necessary documentation and policies to comply with audit requirements
• Manage risk within the area
• Comply with all regulatory and governance requirements
• Configure, maintain, and monitor IBM i security access
• Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity planning and testing
• Software deployment

• Minimum of 3 years working experience as System Operator in an IBM i environment
• Familiar with all aspects of the IBM i i5 Operating System
• Working knowledge of IBM i Control Language (CL, CL ILE)
• Familiar with IBM i Advanced Job Scheduler
• Familiar with Backup, Recovery and Media Services (BRMS)
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Experience coordinating operations workflows. Detail-oriented with ability to plan, monitor, document, report, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to communicate professionally (in English) with internal and external parties, including clients, vendors and service providers. This includes ability to communicate technical information in simple terms.

• Qshell and Qshell scripting experience
• Exposure and familiarity with ftp, sftp, XCOM, IBM MQ and Connect:Direct
• Basic Linux and bash shell skills

• Grade 12
• IT Diploma/Degree with relevant Certifications

• IBM Certification Course AS24G - System Operator for IBM i
• IBM Certification Course AS27G - Advanced System Operator Workshop for IBM i

Shifts

• Two out of every three weeks, Monday to Friday from 05h00 to 13h00 or 13h00 to 21h00 (every 3rd week being normal office hours)
• Every 3rd Saturday 05h00 to 13h00

Standby

• Every 3rd week Monday to Friday from 21h00 to 05h00
• Every 3rd Saturday 13h00 to Monday 05h00
