HVAC National Technical Manager – Commercial Air Conditioning Systems - Johannesburg

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled National Technical Manager to oversee and lead the technical operations of our Commercial Air Conditioning Systems division. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, ensure the delivery of high-quality HVAC solutions, and support the engineering, service, and sales teams across multiple regions. This role requires deep technical expertise, strategic management skills, and the ability to handle complex HVAC projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the technical operations of the commercial air conditioning systems division at a national level.

Serve as the technical expert and provide guidance to regional teams, ensuring consistent and accurate technical support across all commercial projects.

Collaborate with the engineering, sales, and service teams to ensure the proper design, installation, and maintenance of air conditioning systems.

Develop and implement technical strategies to improve the efficiency, reliability, and performance of HVAC systems and services.

Conduct technical training and workshops for internal teams and external clients to enhance technical knowledge and ensure best practices.

Review and approve system designs, schematics, and technical documentation to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations (e.g., ASHRAE, local building codes).

Oversee the resolution of complex technical issues, troubleshooting system performance problems, and managing warranty claims.

Work closely with suppliers and manufacturers to stay up to date on the latest technologies and products in commercial air conditioning.

Ensure that all systems and services meet environmental and sustainability standards, with a focus on energy efficiency and green building practices.

Conduct site inspections and audits to ensure high-quality installations and adherence to technical standards.

Manage and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to technical operations, ensuring continuous improvement.

Serve as the primary point of contact for technical escalations, providing expert-level support for high-profile or challenging projects.

Stay informed of industry trends and emerging technologies, applying innovative solutions to enhance technical capabilities and client offerings.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
• Proven experience in a senior technical management role within the commercial air conditioning industry.
• Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, including chillers, VRF/VRV systems, ducted systems, and building management systems (BMS).
• Deep understanding of industry standards and regulations, including ASHRAE guidelines, energy efficiency codes, and local HVAC requirements.
• Proven ability to manage technical teams, providing mentorship, leadership, and guidance.
• Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for complex HVAC systems.
• Experience in project management, with the ability to manage multiple large-scale projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Proficiency with relevant software and tools, including AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, and other HVAC-related design software.
• Ability to travel nationally to support teams and projects as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working on large commercial or industrial HVAC projects.
• Knowledge of green building certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM) and sustainable HVAC practices.
• Strong understanding of chilled water systems, hydronic systems, and advanced cooling technologies.
• Experience with energy modeling and system optimization for large commercial buildings.
