SUMMARY:
Ideal Candidate will work in consultation with country leadership, to develop and manage/oversee the implementation of the Clients' Impact Strategy in order to increase the positive impact that the group has on biodiversity conservation and community empowerment in the landscapes in which it operates, whilst ensuring that any negative impacts of the tourism operation are kept to a minimum.

Client has offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Mauritius, Nairobi, Windhoek, Victoria Falls and ideal candidate will be based in any of the offices depending on location.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Key Accountabilities
Management
  • Ensure that the newly drafted Company Impact Strategy and associated funding arrangements is signed off, as required, by the company.
  • Appoint a Programme Manager for each of the three Programmes that fall under the Impact Strategy.
  • Implement the roll-out of the new Impact Strategy across the group including developing suitable awareness/training materials for staff and working with HR to train staff to the necessary levels of understanding and appreciation.
  • Work closely with regional MDs and Impact staff to identify project and partner opportunities to implement the Impact Programmes in each region.
  • Work closely with Company partner non-profits to ensure alignment between their objectives and the objectives of the Impact Strategy.  Also, work with Group Company Secretary to maintain quality control over the governance process of these non-profits to ensure all are managed according to relevant standards and regulations;
  • Develop and implement a granting framework/protocol to be utilised in the allocation of funding from the Group Impact Fund to programmes and projects across the regions where Wilderness operates.
  • Support the Tour de Company team as and where needed, including on various events.
  • Design and implement a framework for monitoring, evaluating and reporting on Impact Programmes.
  • Work closely with the Business Development team to advise on the Impact elements of new business opportunities as those are investigated by the group.
  • Provide management, guidance and support to the group and regional coordinators of the Group Environmental Management Systems to ensure compliance with these requirements in existing operations as well as camp builds and decommissioning.
 
Research
  • Support the development, roll-out and implementation of a Group Impact Research Policy, to guide the nature of research programmes that will be supported by Company and ensure that these are aligned with the Impact Strategy. 
  • Assist in the sourcing and management of students from academic institutions to conduct research in all regions.
 
Reporting
  • Ensure that appropriate reporting frameworks are in place to assemble and analyze relevant Impact data.
  • Work with Group Marketing to design, develop and produce the Group Impact Report.
  • Submit reports to relevant management structures within the Group as and when required.
 
Stakeholder engagement
  • Stakeholder engagement: build relationships and partnerships with government, NGOs, private sector and academia to raise awareness about WS, share learnings, etc.  
  • Represent Company in local and international forums, including conferences, workshops, relevant technical meetings, etc.
  • Regular engagement with all Country Impact and EMS staff, MDs, Operations, Service through country visits, video conferencing, email, etc.
  • Monthly meeting with Marketing and PR departments to discuss Impact projects and activities.
 
Marketing sustainability and raising awareness
  • Work with Group Marketing to design and roll-out a communication plan to launch the Impact Strategy both internally and externally.
  • Develop a protocol for collaborating with Group Marketing team to ensure that they receive a steady and appropriate supply of Impact-related stories for marketing and PR purposes (e.g. newsletters, press releases, website, social media);
  • Oversee collection of information from regions and Group Coordinators to provide information, data, etc. for Group Marketing for posters, social media, award applications, brochures, press releases, posters, infographics, etc.  Assist with ideas, editing and finalization of these.
  • Provide advice and share learnings on Impact programmes and best practices with regions, guests, camp and office staff and other stakeholders through regular presentations, information sharing, etc.
  • Assist in developing standardized presentations for regional staff for the Impact storytelling and relevant projects, research and activities.
  • Maintain oversight of websites of aligned non-profits to ensure their content remains relevant and updated.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • Master's Degree in a relevant field such as conservation biology, environmental science, etc
  • Computer Literate with a good working knowledge of MS Office
 
ADDITIONAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Statistical analysis and reporting
  • Development and implementation of Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks in a conservation and/or community development sphere

REQUIRED MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE
  • At least 10 years working experience in Sustainability/Impact/Conservation
  • Minimum of 2 years working experience in a general management position
  • Proven English literacy (read, write and speak fluently)
  • Experience working in Africa, preferably in different countries
  • Experience working with local communities in Africa
  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Need a strong work ethic, overtime will be required during events.
  • Need good interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with staff, guests, governments, NGOs, and academic institutions.
