GIS Intern

SUMMARY:
An exciting opportunity is currently available for a top performing GIS Intern to work hand in hand with the GIS analyst at the Akhile Management and Consulting (Pty) Ltd Centurion offices.

POSITION INFO:

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE

The GIS Intern works at the intersection of data analysis, programming and cartography. Primary duties include analysing spatial data through mapping software and designing digital maps with geographic data and various other data sets.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs duties in support of the projects GIS databases and geographic information systems capabilities, imports, integrates, extracts and analyses data for a variety of decision support purposes; designs, develops and maintains data layers and data sets;
• Creates geocoding services; monitors geoprocessing steps and performs quality control checks on results; creates highly customized maps and other products;
• Develops and implements complex queries to filter data and simple scripts to automate standard GIS tasks;
• Performing data management and cleaning to convert data into its desired form;
• Creating "shapefiles" to merge topographical data with external data by layering external data over a topographical map;
• Uses software and tools to integrate multiple specialized databases and layers from a variety of sources, including financial data, for analytical purposes;
• Uses demographic information to provide geographic breakdowns of populations of interest, developing reports, maps and other analyses to create a concise visual or graphic representation of complex information and ideas;
• Uses complex GIS-based and other forecasting models to analyse a variety of interdependent variables including geospatial and other data;
• Provides technical support for the implementation and operation of GIS projects;
• Performs GIS analysis, modelling and reporting to support decision making; and 
• Use ArcGIS to analyse the data spatially and interpolate the data to identify areas requiring additional investigation.
