SUMMARY:
My client based in the Northern Suburbs, focusing on the Academic industry is seeking to employ an Editorial Assistant (Peer Review) The Editorial Assistant (Peer Review) will provide key administrative support across the publisher portfolio of scholarly journals/books, assisting the editorial team with editorial development, review workflow and author support throughout the editorial process.

POSITION INFO:

Tasks can include checking manuscripts, sending out reviews, responding to authors, and working with colleagues and editors (both in Africa and overseas) to ensure everything runs smoothly, organise files, and support the office''s day-to-day running by answering calls and emails.

Tasks:

  • Conduct initial technical assessment of newly submitted manuscripts (quality and permission checks).
  • Implement checks (e.g., checklists, plagiarism) on various process points and documents to evaluate the standard of work/task. Take corrective action if the work/task deviates from the standard required.
  • Apply standard procedures to work/task allocated to enhance customer and client experience (e.g., routine email updates, updating user profiles).
  • Transmit actions, tasks, or decisions received from the Editors onto the workflow management system.
  • Monitor timeliness of work/task against average desired timelines and take corrective action to resolve delays.
  • Transform (e.g., masking), apply versioning and sound record-keeping on electronic documents at various process points.
  • Liaising with Authors, Editors and Reviewers, and providing help with publishing-related queries on using and navigating and managing the online submission system.
  • Performing the day-to-day tasks of peer review, aiming to ensure the review process is prompt and rigorous, assisting reviewers in the delivery of high-quality reports in a rapid timeframe.

Requirements:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree, in Publishing or Journalism, or in a subject that is related to any of the content areas regularly encountered in educational publishing projects (an Honours degree in Publishing will be an advantage)
  • Relevant experience in a similar position (will be an advantage)
  • Proven experience in project management.
  • A working knowledge of the scholarly production process.
  • Strong communication skills - both written and verbal.
  • Excellent English language skills (Editorial skills)
  • Strong language and editorial skills in any of the following official South African languages would be advantageous: Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Sepedi, Setswana.
  • Advanced computer skills (especially in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Highly organised and self-motivated, with strong time-management skills.
  • Able to work well under pressure in an open-plan environment.
  • Able to self-manage in a work-from-home environment.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
