The main purpose for this role is to take responsible for Day-to-Day nursing functions within a research-related environment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 with a Nursing Tertiary Qualification and Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)  as an Enrolled Nurse
  • At least 1 -2 years nursing experience in a primary healthcare environment
  • Computer literacy with sound knowledge of email, word processing and internet
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to maintain effectiveness during changing conditions
  • Ability to work harmoniously with youth of diverse backgrounds
  • Client focused
  • Ability to work in a team and to be able to foster a collaborative relationship with local clinics and hospitals
  • Must be detail orientated
  • Ability to work independently
  • Willing to work with COVID positive participants

Advantageous:

  • 1 year research experience
  • Knowledge of HIV and research
  • Training in contraception
  • Working knowledge of an adolescent friendly clinical environment
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certificate
  • Human Subject Protection (HSP) Certificate
  • Xhosa speaking

Responsibilities:

  • Providing a client focused youth friendly sexual and reproductive health service
  • Maintaining strict client confidentiality
  • HIV, STI and pregnancy testing
  • Assist in maintaining good clinic flow
  • Assist Study Coordinators in day to day clinic functions
  • Inform Study Coordinator of daily clinic progress
  • Keeping accurate statistics of client visits
  • Perform phlebotomy
  • Providing pre- and post-test counselling, as well as risk reduction counselling, for clients
  • Obtaining blood and tissue samples and processing them as required
  • Conducting study procedures including contraception, participant diaries etc.
  • Performing other client care procedures as required
  • Entering data on case report forms and processing
  • Performing Quality Control (QC) checks on CRFs and source documents
  • Ordering stock
  • Laboratory support
  • Perform all required medical observations for physical examinations
  • Perform accurate and rigorous specimen labelling
  • Assist to ensure rapid and efficient processing of samples to the designated laboratory
  • Maintain accurate record keeping in phlebotomy room
  • Assist with recording and maintaining cold chain temperatures in phlebotomy area
  • Assist with checking crash cart contents on a monthly basis
  • Assist in liaising with Pharmacist regarding supply and management of Family Planning (FP) and STI drugs
  • Ensure familiarity with local counselling testing and referral guidelines
  • Perform the weekly visits and administer the investigational product (IP) to the study participants as per the protocol, and instructions from Research Nurse, Pharmacist and/or Medical Officer
  • Oversee participant visits and ensure participants move through all study procedures efficiently
  • Assist with screening, consenting, enrolment and follow-up of participants at participating schools including home visits if required
  • Perform participant interviews and counselling as per protocol requirements
  • Attend necessary training when required
  • Participate in conference calls when necessary
