E-COMMERCE MANAGER

Lead the Digital Future of Academic Retail
Van Schaik Bookstore, South Africa’s leading academic bookstore, is seeking a commercially astute and strategically driven E-Commerce Manager to lead and grow our online retail channels.
This is a senior leadership role responsible for driving online revenue growth, optimising our e-commerce platform, assisting with digital marketing performance, and delivering an exceptional customer experience to students, universities, colleges, and educational institutions across South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and full ownership of the company’s e-commerce platform and online sales performance.
- Drive revenue growth, profitability, and market share in the online academic retail space.
- Oversee day-to-day website management including functionality, uptime, security, and user experience optimisation.
- Manage and approve new product listings (academic textbooks, prescribed books, stationery, general merchandise digital products), ensuring pricing and stock accuracy.
- Assisting with the development and executing digital marketing strategies across Google, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and emerging platforms.
- Plan and implement campaigns aligned to academic calendars, peak registration periods, and promotional cycles.
- Monitor and optimise SEO, paid media, email marketing, and social performance.
- Analyse website traffic, conversion rates, AOV, and customer acquisition metrics to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with South African e-commerce legislation.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly performance reports and strategic recommendations for the Managing Director.
- Manage digital agencies, platform providers, and technology partners.
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification in E-Commerce, Digital Marketing, Marketing, Business, or related field.
- 7–10 years’ experience in e-commerce or digital retail with senior-level accountability.
- Proven track record of growing online revenue in a retail environment.
- Strong understanding of digital marketing performance optimisation and analytics.
- Experience managing high-volume online retail platforms.
- Knowledge of the South African retail and regulatory environment.
- Experience in academic, publishing, or educational retail will be advantageous.
