SUMMARY:
A Driver/Community Health Worker (Counsellor) - Key Populations Programme vacancy is available at our Client Wits Health Consortium's Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (RHI) in Bellville, Cape Town - Western Cape.

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Main purpose of the job

  • To drive mobile clinic transporting clinical staff for outreach activities and clients to and from different areas and to collect/deliver documents from various locations in accordance with the relevant policies and procedures
  • To provide HIV counselling and testing to Transgender women, link them to HIV treatment and prevention services and retain them in care using data-driven tracking and tracing of patients who are Lost to Follow Up

Location

  • Bellville – Cape Town

Key performance areas

  • Drive mobile clinic with care and consideration to other road users
  • Liaise with the community outreach team for daily transport schedules
  • Transport outreach teams and clients safely to and from destinations
  • Complete relevant vehicle usage forms in accordance with policy
  • Keep the mobile clinic clean and carry out the necessary checks
  • Report any vehicle mechanical faults, repairs or vehicle accidents and assist with vehicle maintenance duties
  • Always obey traffic rules
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
  • Conduct health information, education, and communication (IEC) activities with female sex workers and/ or their clients at brothels and community based hot spots
  • Demonstrate condoms usage to clients at outreach sites
  • Conduct pre and/or post-HIV test counselling
  • Link Transgender women to HIV prevention and treatment services
  • Provide adherence counselling and support to clients on antiretroviral therapy (ART)

Required minimum education and training

  • Grade 12
  • HIV counselling and a testing certificate
  • Valid driver’s license, including PDP certificate
  • Fluent in English and other Africa language

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Basic HIV education and counselling
  • Empathetic with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft office
  • Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
  • Able to work independently and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum of 6 months of working experience as a Community Health Worker or Lay Counsellor
  • 2 Years as an HTS counsellor
