SUMMARY:
Driver x 5 (2 Months Fixed Term Contract) vacancies are available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit (VIDA) in the North West Province.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, formerly RMPRU (Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit) has for over 20 years conducted numerous studies to assess the burden of and to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD).

Current studies and projects include infant rotavirus and BCG trials, immunizing pregnant women to protect their infants against disease (including influenza, Group B streptococcus, and respiratory syncytial virus), and the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) initiatives.

In 2020, VIDA commenced two international trials on COVID-19 vaccines amongst several other COVID-19 studies. World Health Organization position papers directly refer to the work conducted by RMPRU and have used such data generated to inform policy and recommendations for vaccine implementation globally and here in South Africa.

By combining clinical, microbiological, and epidemiological expertise in an African setting, the unit has made significant contributions in vaccine development against the leading respiratory and enteric pathogens contributing to under-5 childhood morbidity and mortality in Africa and other low and middle-income countries.

VIDA aims to continue to save lives, especially children, across Africa and low and middle-income countries, through leading and pioneering research in the field of vaccines and infectious diseases.

Main purpose of the job

• To transport team, recruit and retention of study participants

Location

• VIDA – North West Province

Key performance areas

• Transporting data collectors to various demographic sites
• Fostering good relations with community members (where necessary)
• Assisting Team Leader to ensure that scheduled time is met
• Assisting Team Leader to ensure high-quality data are collected by team members
• Establishing a relationship of trust and respect with participants
• Ensure that the vehicle is always kept very clean
• Ensure the car is in the right condition to operate before moving
• Ensure that the car is booked and taken for service at regulated instances (after liaison with Team Leader)
• Ensure the vehicle is parked at the designated place every day after working hours
• Assist in providing appropriate solutions to tasks or deadlines not met
• Establishing a relationship of trust and respect with participants
• Report on the number of participants interviewed on daily basis to team leader
• Ensure that consent forms are accurately completed and signed by all parties

Required minimum education and training

• Grade 12
• Basic Counselling Certificate
• Valid Driver’s License

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

• Self-motivated
• Ability to work under pressure including odd hours when necessary
• Good relating skills, time conscious
• Sound knowledge of the entire suburb of Thembelihle and Soweto is an added advantage
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) advantageous

Required minimum work experience

• Minimum 1 years’ work experience in a Research Environment
