CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
Re-imagining, scoping and positioning ‘engagement’ to advance the University as a transformative and responsive institution in service of society, and translate these into programmatic work priorities of the Nelson Mandela University
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• Ensuring alignment of the engagement strategy, policies, and praxes with the University’s Vision 2030.
• Coordinating engagement across the divisions, units, faculties, and entities of the University.
• Facilitating programmes and institutional activities aimed at consolidating engagement as one of the core mandates
of the university.
• Furthering the scholarship of engagement through partnerships and collaborations: locally, nationally, and
internationally.
• Converting the University’s hub-of-convergence philosophy into practical strategies, integrated across the
University.
• Building equalizing connections between university and society inclusive of community-based organisations and
activist formations.
• Strengthening the University’s engagement relationships with industry, the state and the general public and private
sector.
• Initiate and manage signature engagement projects within the context of Vision 2030.
• Manage and oversee the Units within the Engagement Office from a programme, human resource, and finance
perspective.
• Measuring, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on University engagement, utilizing appropriate digital
architectures.

• Demonstrable ability to converse with engagement philosophies and approaches within higher education.
• Networking, communication, relationship building and partnership development skills, including the ability to
communicate at all levels with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change, comfortable with ambiguity, and an ability to navigate complex
community issues.
• Policy formulation, implementation, and oversight ability.
REQUIREMENTS
• A relevant Doctorate degree
• 6-8 years experience in a higher education engagement environment of which 5 years in a university management
capacity
