CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The core purpose of this post is to strategically direct and lead historically-informed research and engagement programmes steered by the critical study of racism and democracy that respond to the urgent social challenges of our time.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• Re-appraise the work of the Centre within the context of contemporary forms of racism, ethnicism, race essentialism, nationalism, etc. and their implications for democracy, nationally and globally.
• Through consultation develop a revitalised programme for the Centre around research, engagement and advocacy, building on existing programming, to align with V2030 of the University as a transformative, responsive institution in service of society.
• Locate the Centre’s work within Critical Global and African intellectual traditions, gender, sexuality and disability studies, and intersectionality scholarship and praxis.
• Advance inter-and transdisciplinary studies and the revitalisation of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

• Build networks, locally and globally, to study the racial ordering of the world and anti-democratic tendencies and movements, and their production of local and global inequalities, and develop and implement counterstrategies.
• Initiate and manage signature projects within the ambit of the Centre’s work.
• Manage and oversee the work of the Centre from a programme, human resource and finance perspective.
CORE COMPETENCIES
• Demonstrable ability to converse with philosophies and theories on racism and democracy
• Communication, relationship building, networking and partnership development skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with staff and communicate at all levels with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
• Proficient in change management and community engagement.
• Experience in fundraising
REQUIREMENTS
• A relevant doctoral degree
• A relevant publication record
• Ten years’ experience in a higher education environment
• Five years’ experience in a university management capacity
