SUMMARY:
Design Manager

POSITION INFO:

The purpose of this role is to manage that the technical designs are completed on time, to be standard and compliantly in line with

fire control regulation, standards, codes of good practice, and laws. In addition, the Design Manager is responsible for developing

the technical successors in the business so that there are future technical industry experts to promote into leadership roles within

Company.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS ACTIVITIES

Business Planning

• Develop the annual, quarterly and monthly Department Operational Plan inline

with Organisational strategy and targets by evaluating strategy and targets,

gathering inputs, developing plans and submitting for review, amendment and

approval by the deadline as scheduled and required

• Track and manage delivery against business plan and targets by recording

delivery, tracking performance, identifying and resolving challenges, identifying

opportunities and solutions and implementing as agreed at all times

• Manage profitability of Department by developing the annual budget, managing

delivery against budget, implementing cost saving and efficiency improvement

activities and achieving profitability targets monthly, quarterly and annually.

Department Management

• Define Department policy and procedure by defining, documenting, reviewing,

updating and submitting for approval at least annually

• Manage the delivery of design against quality and timeline delivery standards and

expectations by defining standards, developing weekly design programs,

tracking delivery, resolving issues and allocating required resources at all times

and as required

• Upskill design team on design principles, legislation and regulation by identifying

changes and training needs and upskilling as required

• Identify and implement opportunities for improving productivity and profitability

of Department by conducting research, evaluating industry trends, identifying

opportunities, developing recommendation reports, submitting for approval and

implementing approved interventions as scheduled and required

• Manage internal stakeholder relationships and contribute to overall Company

delivery by managing that delivery teams (Design, Operations, Sales etc.) engage,

understand customer needs, solve challenges and queries, manage expectations

and build mutually beneficial and respectful relationships at all times

Management Reporting

• Develop and submit departmental reporting by gathering required information,

collating, checking for accuracy and completeness and submitting in defined

templates by the defined deadline

Implement accurate data gathering and Departmental tracking and measuring

tools by identifying areas that require measurement, designing measurement tools, implementing and gathering accurate data at all times

• Manage staff compliance with data completion for reporting by training, evaluating compliance and addressing non-compliance as required Succession Development

• Develop the Company staff succession planning plan by understanding Company succession requirements and developing the upskilling of successors through the Design team at least annually

• Defining Design team succession development requirements and implement by developing requirements document, reviewing against Design team employees,

developing opportunities for design team candidates to gain exposure and

opportunity in aligned succession path and report on succession progress at least

quarterly and annually

• Manage the implementation of the Company Succession Plan through the

Design team recruitment and upskilling procedures by defining, communicating

with HR, aligning procedures to requirements and implementing as required

Staff Management

• Manage resourcing by identifying roles required, supporting the development of job

descriptions and recruiting, selecting and inducting staff as required

• Manage staff by defining performance expectations, providing staff with feedback on performance, addressing any areas of misconduct or non-performance,

managing that compliant disciplinary measures are taken when required and

building relationships with staff monthly and as required

• Develop staff by identifying skills gaps and supporting staff to develop skills monthly

and as required

• Comply with HR policies and procedures by tracking staff behaviour, addressing

areas of non-compliance and implementing corrective action as required

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

• NQF 5 in design principles or similar

• ASIB Competency certificate (Compulsory)

Experience

• 5 -7 years design management experience

• 5 years Fire Protection Industry and Installation experience

• 2 years management experience
