Data Scientist (12 Months contract) Wits NICD

Main purpose of the job:

• To utilize analytical, statistical, and programming skills to collect, analyze, and interpret large data sets related to whole genome sequencing and develop bioinformatics capacity

Location:

• NICD Sandringham - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Develop, implement, and maintain systems for bioinformatics data management and reporting, integrating genomics and metadata
• Provide high-level informatics support
• Provide technical input into research tools and database design, analysis, and interpretation of data
• Develop user-specific dashboards
• Develop automated reports as required
• Develop, implement, and maintain all related SOPs
• Compile monthly/quarterly/annual progress reports as required
• Develop pipelines and workflows for efficient analysis of data
• Assist in funding proposals and research grants
• Work with external partners to identify research funding opportunities locally and internationally
• Teach, train, and assist researchers with bioinformatics analysis

Required minimum education and training:

• PhD in Bioinformatics or equivalent

Required minimum work experience:

• 3 years of work experience in bioinformatics or related field

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• The successful incumbent must have the below:
  • Strong background in bioinformatics and data science
  • Good programming skills
  • Knowledge of Linux and workflows
  • Strong Python and R programming skills
  • Knowledge of database systems (SQL, Access)
