A Clinical Trial Assistant (ending November 2021) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Nelson Mandela Academic Clinical Research Unit (NeMACRU) in Mthatha - Eastern Cape.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Nelson Mandela Academic Clinical Research Unit (NeMACRU) is a research entity of the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital established by the hospital in association with the Walter Sisulu University, Faculty of Health Sciences.  NeMACRU is located in one of the poorest districts (OR Tambo District Municipality) of the Eastern Cape Province. The existence of this site will not only promote excellent research output in the area but will support local health facilities with health education on vaccines and HIV Prevention. 

Main purpose of the job

  • To perform clinical trial support activities and clerical duties to ensure adherence to protocols and quality information

Location

  • Mthatha

Key performance areas

  • Book patients for pre-screening appointments (recruitment)
  • Assist in the coordination of patients’ appointments in relation to the clinical trial protocol schedules
  • Contact patients to remind them of visits at least one day prior to visit
  • Check booking diary that patient visits are recorded
  • Assist receptionist in phoning patients who do not arrive until contact is made
  • Assist the Study Coordinators in filing and maintaining essential documents within the ISF
  • Quality checks patient files and resolve queries in conjunction with the Study Coordinator prior to Monitor visits
  • Answer administrative queries within agreed timelines to Study Coordinator and CRA’s
  • Assist the Laboratory Assistant and/or Study Coordinators to contact laboratories for outstanding blood and ECG results and make sure the results are signed by the doctors in a timely manner
  • Prepare, maintain and file patient files (current and new) in accordance with site filing and archiving system
  • Copy informed consent forms for files and provide copies to patients
  • File laboratory, ECG, radiology, nuclear medicine, pathology and any other source note reports relating to scheduled and unscheduled visits
  • Correlate filing with visit specific source note specifications

Required minimum education and training

  • Relevant Post Matric Certificate, Diploma, or Degree

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Knowledge of research methodologies and clinical trials experience would be an advantage
  • Ordered and systematic in approach to tasks, with strict compliance to protocols
  • Exceptional organizational and administrative skills are required
  • Ability to prioritize own workload, take initiative (pro-active) and work to tight deadlines
  • Self-motivated with high regard for work ethic, values and integrity
  • Overtime may be required from time to time
  • Communicate effectively with patients, management, clinicians and suppliers
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team to ensure good patient care
  • An empathetic communicator able to see things from another’s point of view
  • Work effectively, cooperatively and amicably with patients and staff
  • Display concern for patients and willingness to respond to patients’ needs and requirements

Required minimum work experience

  • 1-2 years administration experience in a clinical trial environment
