A Clinical Psychologist (Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's AGINCOURT in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) is an exceptional health and population research centre in rural northeast South Africa. It provides an extensive data resource from more than 25 years of longitudinal health and socio-demographic surveillance. Using this platform, the Unit is conducting a Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial to assess the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a digitally delivered Behavioural Activation Therapy intervention to treat depression among rural adolescents. The intervention consists of 6 sessions of Behavioural Activation delivered by a smartphone application, supported by weekly phone calls from a trained Peer Mentor over 10 weeks

Main purpose of the job:

  • To oversee assessment and management of adolescents participating in the DoBAt Pilot Trial who have been identified to have severe depression, suicidal ideation, and other risks and to train and supervise the Peer Mentors in conjunction with the DoBAt Project Manager

Location:

  • Agincourt - Bushbuckridge (Mpumalanga Province)

Key performance areas

  • Oversee assessment and management of adolescents participating in the DoBAt Pilot Trial who have been identified to have severe depression, suicidal ideation and other risks as outlined in the Risk Management Protocol
  • Supervise 2 Registered Counsellors who will assist with assessment and management of at-risk adolescents
  • Work with local social workers and healthcare workers to ensure that adolescents referred to their services attend appointments and receive appropriate management and follow-up
  • Maintain participant risk management and referral documentation in accordance with the established Risk Management protocols
  • Together with the Project Manager to oversee the training of ± 20 Peer Mentor candidates in accordance with the Peer Training Manual from 17th April – 29th May 2021
  • Contribute to the selection of ± 10 Peer Mentors who will participate in the DoBAt Pilot Trial based on their competency assessment at the end of training
  • Oversee the supervision of Peer Mentors during the DoBAt Pilot Trial (from June – December 2021)
  • Ensure the Peer Mentor Programme is delivered with high fidelity to the Peer Mentor Training Manual and in accordance with Good Clinical Practise

Required minimum education and training

  • Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa
  • Driver’s licence
  • Xitsonga speaker (desirable but not essential)
  • Experience working within the public mental health sector and with adolescent populations
  • High ethical standards and familiarity with Good Clinical Practice
  • Leadership skills and ability to train and supervise a group of Peer Mentors or similar
  • Demonstrates warmth, empathy and ability to build rapport with Peer Mentors and adolescents
  • Demonstrates professionalism, integrity and commitment to their work.

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical or field-based research experience
