SGS Matrolab is seeking to fulfil a key role in the Kimberley Civil Engineering Laboratories. The role requires the incumbent to manage a laboratory. He / She will be responsible for all laboratory related tasks, whether it''s on site or in the commercial laboratory. He / She shall be responsible for the implementation, maintenance and improvement of our quality systems. To ensure that the laboratory functions smoothly, with excellent quality of service, the saving of manpower cost, which contribute to accuracy, productivity and profitability. To ensure all equipment are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. To ensure materials testing are completed in all laboratory division, including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, aggregate with bench calculation as and when required for testing. The Laboratory Manager will ensure that the laboratory is clean at all times and will carry out all work-related instructions from the authorized personnel.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the relevant Regional Manager and are expected to:

 

  • Is responsible to supervise and/or carry out and take responsibility of testing for all tests that the employee is deemed competent for strictly in accordance to prescribed methods. 
  • Responsible to ensure the accreditation and Health and Safety regulations requirements are adhered to in and around the laboratory.  
  • Marketing of services to existing and potential clients, submit monthly marketing reports (if required).
  • Complete and submit tenders/ quotations for new projects (if required).
  • Ensure cost of projects remain below tendered/quoted prices.
  • Submit reports to line manager as and when required.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct test methods are followed. 
  • Responsible liaison with clients for receiving job instruction. 
  • Review of job instructions and approve for processing. 
  • Review and source of resources where necessary by following the SGS internal procedure.
  • Channel instructions to applicable division.
  • Monitor progress to ensure that tests are completed and reported in time.
  • Final checking and approval of report prior to issue to client.
  • Ensure that the test methods used are most up to date.
  • Evaluate and approve suppliers and sub-contractors. 
  • Ensure that purchased equipment meets specification, before bringing into system. Equipment tick list to be used. 
  • Implement the quality system.
  • Complete audits on documentation, results and reports as per schedule.  
  • Acquisition of capital equipment and consumables as required by test methods - to be done according to directives.
  • Assess results of proficiency tests.
  • Verify calibration of equipment according to schedule.
  • Carry out corrective actions and training as necessary.
  • Arrange repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Monitor the quality of, and certifying of results as issued to client.
  • Review and source of resources where necessary.
  • Train personnel as and when required.
  • Complete weekly inspection reports.
  • Manage subordinates to ensure a disciplined and productive laboratory.
  • Planning and communication to subordinates of work programme.
  • Ensure safety in the laboratory - adhering to Health and Safety specifications.
  • Ensuring that he/she and subordinates are physically able to perform all required duties including picking up and moving samples.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Company''s Code of Integrity & Code of Conduct.
  • At all times, adopt a safe behavior by exercising due regard for the health and safety of yourself, colleagues and clients, in line with the Company''s policies and procedures.

 

Qualification and Experience

 

  • Education :  Relevant national Diploma / NQF 6 OR Grade 12 / NQF4
  • Experience : Drivers License, Relevant National Diploma and three years relevant experience or NQF 6 and three years relevant experience. 
    OR Grade 12 and eight years relevant experience or NQF4 and eight years relevant experience with a drivers license 
    • Competencies :
    • Competent and qualified to do all tests (TMH 1 and SANS) in all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete / aggregate 
      • Competent and qualified to do quality laboratory control and implemen
