The Geochemistry business provides analytical services to all aspects of the minerals industry, including Exploration support, Laboratory analysis, Commercial Transaction Support, Environmental Analysis and Industry Standard Practices and Quality.

SGS is looking for a Chemist who will be responsible to perform analysis on Security exhibits in the most accurate, productive and timely way, as per relevant Test Method Instruction and testify during court cases.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a person who works well under pressure and who has competent technical knowledge of multiple analytical processes and who has operational experience in a SANAS 17025 accredited facility.

 

Primary Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Section Manager, you in the role, are expected to:

  • Evaluate, validate and report analytical results.
  • Evaluate and ensure technical accuracy of analytical results reported.
  • Monitor analytical processes and take remedial action where deviations/ discrepancies arise impacting on the quality of analytical results.
  • Consult with the Manager to address retests, result anomalies or other problems with samples or analyses
  • Assist with maintaining up to date records of relevant documentation required for accreditation in consultation with the Classical Chemist and/or Manager
  • Keep abreast with the new trends and current developments within the analytical science.
  • Keep the detailed records of all experimental/investigative work undertaken and submit the required technical report.
  • Ensure effective and optimal utilization of staff, equipment and facilities within the department.
  • Drive good housekeeping practices within the department to ensure that the work areas and surrounding environment is kept clean at all times.
  • Comply and conform to the QHSE policy of the company and ensure staff follow all safety procedures.
  • Ensure proper and correct profiling of QA/QC reports for various clients in keeping to agreed work schedules.
  • Ensure FAS process (weighing, fluxing, fusion, cupellation and digestion of prills/parting is followed exactly as to relevant Competence Modules set.
  • Liaise with the Supervisors/Team leaders to ensure customer requirements are achieved with regard to the turnaround time commitments.
  • Perform analysis on various Security exhibits, write court reports and testify in court.
  • Perform non – routine analysis.
  • Must be willing to work overtime/flexible hours when necessary.
  • Assist in the management of special projects as allocated from start to completion reporting progress to FAS Manager.
  • Assist with the training of new Laboratory employees on the application of the Fire Assay techniques and processes.
  • Ensure that the electronic Detailed Production report is completed for each shift.
  • Monitor and assist with ordering of consumable items to ensure that correct stock levels are maintained at all times.
  • Assist in the method development and method validation.
  • Assist in improving the Fire assay process and problem solving.
  • Assist in the investigation of any irregularities/non conformances within the Fire Assay process registered as the Improvement Requests and Client’s Complaints.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Work in other departments as and when required
  • Identify and report quality issues and implement the corrective and preventative action
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Assist with consumables and inventory control and ordering within budgetary constraints.
  • Discuss and assist the Senior Chemist/Manager with the evaluation of deviations to process, protocols and methods.
  • Validate, approve and authorize analytical results.
  • Authorize re-assays of nonconforming results.
  • Assist with the Authorizing and competency sign-off of staff.
  • Assist the Manager to validate new analytical methods and calibration standards for use.

 

Qualification and Experience

  • BSc, BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry
  • Minimum 5 years experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory, within Fire Assay
  • Fully acquainted with LIMS (G6)
  • Fully acquainted with the LIMS system (administration & operation)
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management System
  • English fluent. Any other language an asset
