JOB DESCRIPTION:

Main purpose of the job:

To utilize analytical and programming skills to conduct bioinformatics analysis for respiratory pathogens in both surveillance and research activities and develop bioinformatics capacity

Location:

NICD Sandringham - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

Perform advanced analysis and interpretation of data produced from next-generation sequencing systems
Provide high-level bioinformatics support
Develop, improve, and operate genomic data analysis pipelines and workflows for efficient analysis of data
Manage and maintain high-quality sequence data and metadata
Conduct and initiate research in the area of NGS data analysis
Monitor and manage bioinformatics requests projects to ensure objectives of ongoing studies are achieved
Assist in funding proposals and research grants
Participate in training staff, students, and collaborators in bioinformatics analysis

Required minimum education and training:

MSc in Bioinformatics or equivalent

Required minimum work experience:

One (1) year of experience in a diagnostic or research laboratory working independently with next-generation sequencing data analysis

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

PhD would be advantageous
The successful incumbent must have the below:
- Strong background in bioinformatics
- Knowledge of Linux and workflows/pipelines
- Strong Python and R programming skills
