CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The incumbent will be on university conditions of service and reports to the Joint Academic Head of Public Health at Nelson Mandela University.
The key responsibilities include:
•Academic coordination of the MMed Public Health Medicine registrar training programme
•Establishing and managing the training platform for public health medicine registrars in the Western Region of the Eastern Cape Province
•Contributing to the development of public health postgraduate diploma and Masters' coursework programmes
•Postgraduate research supervision for the MSc degrees in Epidemiology, Public Health, and International Public Health
•Postgraduate research supervision for the PhD degrees in Epidemiology, Public Health, and International Public Health (Associate Professor level)
• Delivery of public health lectures to medical students
• Supervision of undergraduate health research projects
•Conducting relevant public health assessments of medical students
•Provision of public health technical support to Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan and Sarah Baartman Health Districts
•Contributing to the development of the department's health systems research profile
•Representing the Department of Public Health in relevant School and Faculty
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• To develop and manage the academic training programme for registrars in public health medicine
• To establish the service training platform for public health medicine registrar training at district level
and within tertiary hospitals
• To support curriculum development for postgraduate diplomas and Masters coursework
programmes in public health
• To supervise MSc Epidemiology/Public Health/International Public Health and MMed Public Health
Medicine research projects
• To supervise PhD Epidemiology/Public Health/International Public Health research projects
(Associate Professor level)
• To supervise undergraduate health research projects in years 4 and 5 of the MBChB programme
• To deliver public health lectures in years 1, 2, 4, and 5 of the MBChB programme
• To provide public health technical support at district and hospital level in the areas of health
measurement, disease prevention and control, and health systems management
• To undertake research aimed at strengthening the provincial health system
• To working collaboratively with staff within the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Eastern Cape
Department of Health
• To contribute to the continuing professional development of university and Joint Eastern Cape
Department of Health staff engaged in public health-related work

• Extensive knowledge of the training requirements for public health medicine specialists in
South Africa
• Skills and expertise in conducting quantitative(epidemiological) research
• Experience in teaching undergraduate health professional students and postgraduate public
health students
• Interest and engagement in health professions education and curriculum development
• Ability to lead teams as well as work constructively as a team member
• Ability to work flexibly in cross-functional teams in the teaching and development of students in
the Medical School and Faculty of Health Sciences.

with the medical programme team, medical students, postgraduate public health students,
and managers and staff within the Eastern Cape Department of Health

POST REQUIREMENTS
Education
MBChB degree (or equivalent HPCSA registrable qualification)
Master of Medicine in Public Health Medicine (or equivalent HPCSA
registrable qualification as a Public Health Medicine Specialist)
Advantages:

Registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Independent

Experience and skills
Senior Lecturer level
A minimum of three years' experience working within the South
African health system
A minimum of three years' university-level experience in teaching
and learning
Demonstrable experience in conducting quantitative research
Valid code 08 driver's license.
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office packages
Associate Professor level
A minimum of five years' experience working within the South
African health system
A minimum of four years' university-level experience in teaching and
learning
Evidence of research supervision at postgraduate level
A strong publication record with evidence of recent publications in
peer-reviewed journals
