POSITION INFO:

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Chemistry at the Nelson Mandela University has a long history of excellence and leadership in teaching and research in the various fields of chemistry. The person appointed to this position will be expected to teach general chemistry topics as well as inorganic and analytical chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on both North and South campus sections of the Chemistry Department. The person will be expected to conduct appropriate research, and to produce and disseminate knowledge in chemistry. The person will also be expected to create industry links and international partnerships in their area of research expertise.        

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Facilitation of multimodal teaching and learning in Chemistry.
  • Supervision of post-graduate research students.
  • Development of an individual field of research in chemical sciences.
  • Development of national and international research networks and partnerships.
  • Manage, conduct, publish and promote research. 
  • Involvement in academic engagement at the institutional, regional and national levels. 
  • Participate in public activities of the Faculty of Science and the Department of Chemistry.
  • Perform administration duties normally associated with the academic position.

     Perform any other related duties as and when required.

      

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Expert knowledge of the theory and application of chemistry in particular Inorganic and computational chemistry.
  • Ability to lecture General and Inorganic Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Ability to contribute to the creation of knowledge through research and publication of chemistry research results in accredited national and international chemistry journals.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate students at both masters and doctoral levels.
  • Ability to attract external financial research support. 
  • Effective management of personnel, and of teaching and research programmes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 

      Associate Professor:

  • Relevant Doctorate degree in chemistry (preferably PhD in Inorganic Chemistry).
  • 6 or more years of relevant experience in facilitating teaching and learning (university teaching) at undergraduate and postgraduate academic levels.
  • A successful postgraduate supervision record at Masters and Doctoral levels.
  • A track record of credible research outputs (e.g. articles, patents and book chapters) in Inorganic and/or Computational Chemistry.
  • Evidence of research collaborations nationally and internationally.
  • A proven record of attracting competitive research funding.
  • Excellent administration skills as well as evidence in involvement in curriculum design or programme/ module review.

      Professor:   

  • Relevant Doctorate degree in chemistry (preferably PhD in Inorganic Chemistry). 
  • 7 years of relevant experience in facilitating teaching and learning (university teaching) at undergraduate and postgraduate academic levels (3 years’ experience as associate professor at an institution of higher learning will be advantageous).
  • Extensive track record and clear evidence of research leadership in supervising Master and Doctoral candidates.
  • A track record of credible research outputs (e.g articles, patents and book chapters) in Inorganic and/or Computational Chemistry.
  • Evidence of research collaborations nationally and internationally.
  • A proven record of attracting competitive research funding.
  • Excellent administration skills as well as evidence in involvement in curriculum design, programme or module review.
