CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

Be responsible for the day-to-day operations, longer term planning and running of the Medical Physiology laboratory at Missionvale campus ● Be responsible for the maintenance and renewal of laboratory equipment, instruments and consumables  ● Support the faculty in facilitating physiology teaching in laboratories to Medical and Health Sciences students ●  Be responsible for the receiving, storage of consumables for under-graduate and post-graduate teaching activities ● Perform administrative tasks as required

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  1. Assist with the setting of the physiology laboratory equipment and supplies
  2. Contribute actively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning
  3. Demonstrate and provide instruction to Medical and Health Sciences students in the proper care and use of laboratory materials and equipment
  4. Oversee the ordering, receipt of laboratory equipment and consumables
  5. Advise on the purchasing of new equipment and be responsible for maintaining the asset register
  6. Be responsible for the operation, routine maintenance, repair, monitoring and cleaning of all laboratory equipment and supplies
  7. Monitor the materials and ensure biohazards resulting from laboratory classes are disposed according to prescribed standards
  8. Work with ICT to oversee and maintain the operation of electronic devices used in teaching Medical Physiology
  9. Ensure that proper health and safety requirements are maintained

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  1. Knowledge and application of the National Health Act (No. 61 of 2003) and the Occupational Health & Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993).
  2. Experience in the use of blended learning for teaching Medical Physiology
  3. High level of professionalism, ethical standards, discretion, respect and confidentiality 
  4. Ability to interact constructively with students to aid in their teaching and learning
  5. Ability to oversee the day-to-day operation of specialized instruments used in the physiology laboratory
  6. Ability to prioritize and accurately complete tasks to the required standards
  7. Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, excellent time management and organizational skills
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

BSc majoring in Human Physiology

Experience

At least two years’ work experience in a Physiology laboratory

At least one years teaching experience Medical Physiology

Skills

Sound skills in MS Office Suite (training will be provided on the software systems used by the university)
