CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

Be responsible for the day-to-day operations, long term planning and running of the Medical Biochemistry laboratory at Missionvale campus. Be responsible for the maintenance and renewal of laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents, consumables and biological materials. Support the faculty in facilitating Medical Biochemistry teaching and research in laboratories to Health Sciences students.  Be responsible for the receiving, storage and disposal of chemicals and human tissue for under-graduate and post-graduate teaching activities, research and medical science workshops for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Perform administrative tasks as required

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  1. Assist the Head of Department in budgeting for Medical Biochemistry and Chemistry equipment and supplies
  2. Provide student teaching in the field of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular/Cell Biology
  3. Demonstrate and provide instruction to Health Sciences students in the proper care and use of laboratory materials and equipment
  4. Oversee the ordering, receipt and care of equipment, consumables and chemical reagents and the preparation of chemical buffers
  5. Maintain inventories, place orders, manage receipt and stocking of material, supplies and equipment for the laboratory
  6. Be responsible for the operation, routine maintenance, repair, monitoring and cleaning of all laboratory equipment and supplies
  7. Monitor the production of and ensure the collection, processing and storage of hazardous waste materials and toxic chemicals resulting from laboratory classes is done according to standard
  8. Work with ICT to oversee and maintain the operation of digital devices used in teaching Medical Biochemistry
  9. Ensure that all laboratory users follow the required ethical standards and codes of conduct at all time

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  1. Knowledge and application of the National Health Act (No. 61 of 2003) and the Occupational Health & Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993).
  2. Knowledge and applications of chemical and laboratory safety protocols
  3. Experience in the use of blended learning for teaching Medical Biochemistry and/or Cell and Molecular Biology
  4. High level of professionalism, ethical standards, discretion, respect and confidentiality 
  5. Ability to interact constructively with students to aid in their teaching and learning
  6. Ability to oversee the day-to-day operation of specialized instruments such as cell culture equipment and chemistry practical equipment
  7. Ability to prioritize and accurately complete tasks to the required standards
  8. Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, excellent time management and organizational skills
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

Education

BSc or BTech degree or equivalent majoring in Medical Biochemistry

Experience and skills

At least two years'' work experience in a medical science laboratory

At least one years teaching experience in medical science/biochemistry

MS Office Suite proficiency (training will be provided on the software programs used in the Faculty of Health Sciences).
