CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

Be responsible for the day-to-day operations, longer term planning and running of the Human Anatomy laboratory at Missionvale campus - Be responsible for the maintenance and renewal of laboratory equipment, instruments and biological materials - Support the faculty in facilitating anatomy teaching in laboratories to Health Sciences students - Be responsible for the receiving, storage and disposal of human tissue for under-graduate and post-graduate teaching activities, research and surgical workshops for the Faculty of Health Sciences - Perform administrative tasks as required

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  1. Assist the Head of Department in budgeting for anatomy equipment and supplies
  2. Provide student teaching in the field of Human Gross Anatomy/Histology/Embryology
  3. Demonstrate and provide instruction to Health Sciences students in the proper care and use of laboratory materials and equipment
  4. Oversee the ordering, receipt and care of preserved specimens and the preparation of anatomical specimens
  5. Maintain inventories, place orders, manage receipt and stocking of material, supplies and equipment for the laboratory
  6. Be responsible for the operation, routine maintenance, repair, monitoring and cleaning of all laboratory equipment and supplies
  7. Monitor the production of and ensure the collection, processing and storage of hazardous waste materials and toxic chemicals resulting from laboratory classes is done according to standard
  8. Work with ICT to oversee and maintain the operation of digital devices used in teaching anatomy
  9. Ensure that all laboratory users follow the required ethical standards and codes of conduct at all time in respect of human tissue and anatomical specimens

CORE COMPETENCIES

  1. Knowledge and application of the National Health Act (No. 61 of 2003) and the Occupational Health & Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993) particularly the use and maintenance of human cadaveric material.
  2. Ability to prepare and care for anatomical specimens for teaching purposes
  3. Experience in the use of blended learning for teaching Human Gross Anatomy/Histology

/Embryology

  1. High level of professionalism, ethical standards, discretion, respect and confidentiality 
  2. Ability to interact constructively with students to aid in their teaching and learning
  3. Ability to oversee the day-to-day operation of specialized instruments such as the Anatomage Virtual Dissection Table
  4. Ability to prioritize and accurately complete tasks to the required standards
  5. Well-developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, excellent time management and organizational skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education

BSc or BTech degree or equivalent majoring in Human Anatomy/Histology/Embryology

Experience and skills

At least two years'' work experience in a Human Anatomy laboratory

At least one years'' teaching experience in Human Anatomy
