SUMMARY:
An Assistant Research Coordinator (12-Month Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium, in Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape.

POSITION INFO:

Background

Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.

Main purpose of the job

  • To assist with the coordination of the activities of the Research Ethics Committee and the Innovative Research and Higher Degrees Committee in the Western Deanery (Region)
  • To provide administrative support to the Research component and the Associate Dean of the Central Deanery
  • To coordinate and support research projects conducted in the Western Deanery

Key performance areas 

  • Organize local courses project management, grant writing, science communication, research ethics and building a research profile – for Early Career Researchers
  • Organize clinical staff training on proper data collection, management, and study design to leverage their clinical expertise to assist with the conduct of research in their local clinical setting
  • Disseminate Request for Application (RFA) for grants aimed at faculty and investigators
  • Coordinate and support the functioning of the Research Innovation &Higher Degrees Committee (RIHDC) and the Research Ethics Committee (REC)
  • Develop a sponsor-centered research monitoring and evaluation program for active research projects funded through the above-mentioned grant mechanism
  • Track research and publication outputs from sponsored grants and the faculty
  • Facilitate collaborations between researchers at WSU and other local and international researchers
  • Help facilitate ethics submission of proposals to the RIHDC and REC at WSU
  • Facilitate linkage to library services
  • Facilitate linkage to statistical support for data analysis services
  • Provide administrative support to principal investigators for the submission of grant applications, abstract submissions to scientific meetings, and peer-review publications
  • Coordinate the procurement of equipment and the health resource needs for local projects
  • Develop and strengthen a research partnership within the National Health Laboratory Service for the facilitation of laboratory-based needs in future research
  • Support international collaborations and local researchers by supporting access and procurement of research materials prior to the initiation of the research project
  • Monitor timeframes and scope of activities as circumstances dictate
  • Support the Preparation of budget and budget justification
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and spending and prepare relevant reports
  • Write study-specific documents
  • Coordinate and serve as a point of contact between sites and sponsors (including face-to-face meetings with sponsors, e-mails, teleconferences, video conferencing, negotiations with suppliers, etc.)
  • Support adherence to protocol at sites

Required minimum education and training

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

  • Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Proactive and adaptable
  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team. Experience working in a research environment
  • Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
  • Tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Preferably some experience in project management
  • Working overtime
  • Communicate effectively with management, clients, and sponsors
  • Work as part of a team to ensure good service delivery

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum 2 years experience in a Research environment
