Working Hours: 6am to 6pm for 7 day shifts – one week on, one week off

Key Activities

The scope of practise of a Registered Nurse shall entail amongst others the following acts or procedures, which may be performed by scientifically based physical, chemical, psychological, social, spiritual, financial, educational and technological means applicable to the health, care and support practise of older persons.

In addition to the list below additional activities may be required from time to time.

  • The nursing diagnosis of a health, care and support need and the prescribing of a nursing, care and support regimen to meet the need of an older person or, where necessary, by referral to a registered person
  • Assessment and evaluation of an individual’s care and support needs holistically including all aspects of care and support needs

  • The execution of  a program of treatment, care and support, or medication prescribed by a registered person for an older person
  • The treatment, care and support of and the administration of medicine to an older person
  • Monitoring of the older persons vital signs and of his/her reaction to disease conditions, trauma, stress, anxiety, ageing process, medication, treatment, care and support
  • The prevention of disease and promotion of general  healthcare and support by teaching to and counselling with older persons
  • The prescribing, promotion or maintenance of hygiene, physical comfort and re-assurance of the older person
  • The promotion of exercise, rest, sleep and well being with a view to healing and rehabilitation of an older person
  • The facilitation of body mechanisms and the prevention of bodily deformities in an older person in the execution of the nursing, care and support regimen
  • The supervision over and maintenance of a supply of oxygen to an older person
  • The supervision over and maintenance of fluid, electrolyte and acid base balance of an older person
  • The facilitation of the healing of wounds and fractures, the protection of the skin and the maintenance of the sensory functions in an older person
  • The facilitation of the maintenance of bodily regulatory mechanisms and functions in an older person
  • The facilitation of the maintenance of nutrition of an older person
  • The supervision over and maintenance of elimination by an older person
  • The facilitation of communication by and with an older person in the execution of the nursing, care and support regimen
  • The facilitation of the attainment of optimum health. Care, and support for the individual older person in the execution of the nursing, care and support regimen
  • The establishment and maintenance, en the execution of the nursing, care and support regimen, of an environment in which the physical, mental, psychological, spiritual, emotional and financial care and support of an older person is promoted
  • Preparation for and assistance with operative, diagnostic and therapeutic acts of the older person when need to visit an acute health care facility for diagnosis, treatment or rehabilitation
  • The co-ordination of the health, care and support regimens provided for the older person by other categories of health, care and support personnel
  • The provision of effective older person advocacy to enable older persons to obtain health, care and support care he/ she needs
  • Care of the dying older person and the care of a recently deceased older person within the execution of the nursing, care and support regimen
  • Recording and reporting of any abnormalities
  • Recording and Reporting of any possible form of abuse to any older person
Qualifications

Registered as an Enrolled nurse or Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council. Qualification in the care of older persons strongly recommended. At least 1 year of care and support care service delivery to older persons. Diploma as Enrolled or Registered Nurse with the South African Nursing Council. Experience in geriatric nursing strongly recommended.
