This position will work remotely with weekly meetings with the client. Candidate can either be based either in Johannesburg where the Project/Client Headoffice is based or within Mpumalanga close to the project.

Job Description

Our client is looking for a qualified lawyer (not necessarily currently practicing) to work in its mining law department to work as an in-house legal counsel on a specific project for a client of theirs in the mining sector.

The purpose of the role will be to objectively and independently support the management team of the Project with, amongst other, corporate, industry legislation and compliance related functions:

• Responsible for ensuring that the applicable local regulations and legal requirements are met and complied with across the mining operation;
• Contract drafting, under supervision, and Project contract management;
• Managing litigious and non-litigious disputes;
• Responsible for managing external legal counsel relationships on behalf of the Project;
• Responsible for all internal Project legal document management and company secretarial functions across the Project group companies, including Data Room management;
• The administration, creation and enforcement of policies, procedures, and programmes relating to the Project employees (human resource function) including but not limited to assistance with disciplinary procedures;
• Compile and control legal budget; and
• Be the custodian of the Project risk log.

It would be beneficial if the candidate has a background in project management and mining law.

Qualifications

LLB Degree. Admitted as an Attorney in South Africa.

Skills

Have a minimum of 2 – 5 years’ relevant post-admission experience in South Africa (in Mining Law). Have the ability to provide innovative legal service solutions to the Project and strategic needs; Have a strong ability to research legal questions and prepare sound legal opinions; Have strong experience in the rendering of South African corporate law services as we as regulatory services; Have good presentation skills; Have a good command of the English language and effective drafting skills; Have the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; and The ability to operate proactively.
